The strong beer festival dates back to an old tradition belonging to monks who had to significantly reduce their already sparse diet during the fasting period prior to Easter. So they decided to brew strong beer instead which provided them with sufficient nutrients without them breaking their fast. This tradition dates back to the 17th century and is therefore considerably older than the much more famous Oktoberfest.

These days, the largest and most famous strong beer festival takes places in Munich on the Nockherberg terrace. For a long time this site has played host to the Paulaner Brewery. The full-bodied Salvator beer is served in traditional clay jugs here. This event is a real must for anyone keen to soak up some Munich tradition and learn about the art of brewing.
